- the smaller turbos have better response but less power
- the larger turbos produce more power but are laggy

Sequential turbo setups use a smaller turbo paired with a larger turbo, using the smaller turbo to spool up the larger one. You get the power of the larger turbo with the responsiveness of a smaller turbo. But because air flows through both turbos in any situation, the smaller turbo becomes a bottleneck for the system. At high airflow rates, the larger turbo "outpowers" the smaller turbo, which is the cause of most sequential turbo deaths.

With parallel turbo setups, you don't have the bottlenecking issue as with sequential turbo setups. However, because each turbo is essentially on its own, turbo selection has to become more specific for the application - you have to start compromising lag and power. You also have packaging and plumbing issues to deal with.
